Stories for Change La deteccíon temprana puede salvar vidas

Disparities in breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening persist between Hispanic and non-Hispanic White populations, with Hispanic immigrants and individuals with limited English proficiency facing additional structural and linguistic barriers. Stories for Change: La detección temprana puede salvar vidas is a culturally tailored digital storytelling initiative designed to improve cancer screening rates among Spanish-speaking Hispanic adults. RHCP partnered with StoryCenter to facilitate workshops where eight Hispanic storytellers created short digital stories based on their own or a loved one’s experiences with breast, cervical, or colorectal cancer screening.

Pilot findings highlight both need and impact: 51 patients who were overdue for screening viewed the intervention, and 89% reported that the stories “very much” influenced their decision to complete screening. These early results suggest that culturally resonant storytelling can meaningfully address screening gaps. The next phase focuses on finalizing and implementing the storytelling intervention in clinical settings, with pilot testing to further assess feasibility, engagement, and potential to reduce cancer screening disparities in Hispanic communities.
